Dr. Jasmin Moshirpur is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has served as the Dean for Elmhurst/Queens Programs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 1996. She is the former Chief Medical Officer of New York City Health + Hospitals | Elmhurst and Queens, a role she held until December 2023. As of July 2024, she holds the title of Dean Emeritus. Dr. Moshirpur received her M.D. degree from Shiraz University School of Medicine in Iran and immigrated to the U.S. to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She later completed a fellowship in GYN Endocrinology and is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
As Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Department at Elmhurst Hospital Center, Dr. Moshirpur pioneered a highly regarded community program that rigorously emphasized preventive medicine. This included routine Pap smears for early detection of cervical neoplasia and a cancer detection team that performed breast exams on all adult female hospital admissions when clinically feasible. This work laid the foundation for her career, which has been passionately committed to improving and redefining women’s healthcare and medical education. It also helped establish the Cancer Center of Excellence at Queens Hospital Center. In the 1970s, she established the midwifery program at Elmhurst Hospital Center, which focuses on comprehensive, patient-centered care, natural childbirth, and holistic health practices; it continues to thrive today. She was appointed Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1975, a position she held for 26 years.
During her tenure as Dean and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Moshirpur was instrumental in establishing critical services and programs, including a cardiac catheterization center, hip and knee replacement services, a comprehensive stroke program, and a Level 1 trauma center. She also oversaw the development of 32 residency and fellowship programs across various departments. Through her affiliation with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, she recruited a highly qualified group of specialists to serve in the public hospital system.
Dr. Moshirpur has been actively involved with the Office of Gender Equity at Mount Sinai, mentoring women and supporting initiatives to elevate them to leadership roles. Her numerous honors include the Arthritis Foundation’s Women in Motion 2023, Schneps’ Power Women of 2023, Glamour Woman of the Year 2020, Communications Healthcare Hero 2020, Transitional Services for New York 2016 Physician of the Year, the 2015 Jacobi Medallion, Outstanding Clinical Teacher of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Alpha Omega Alpha at Mount Sinai, Torchbearers for Excellence in Health Care at Elmhurst Hospital Center, and President of the Saul B. Gusberg Society, the Queens Gynecology Society, and the Shiraz University Alumni Association. She has also served as Chairman of the Board of the Iranian American Medical Association in the United States and is a member of the American Academy of Medical Directors. Most recently, she was honored by the Harvard College Iranian Association at Harvard University in 2024.
